GP Workload Pressures Threaten Patient Safety, RCGP Survey Warns
Over half of those surveyed said they lack the time to properly assess patients or build strong doctor–patient relationships, while many reported a decline in their own mental health.
Speaking at the RCGP’s Annual Primary Care Conference, Chair Professor Kamila Hawthorne warned that heavy workloads and limited resources are creating an unsustainable situation in general practice. She argued that government plans to reform the NHS through a new 10-Year Health Plan must be backed by sufficient funding and workforce support if they are to succeed.
The survey also showed widespread concern among GPs about the proposed “Neighbourhood Health Services,” with many citing unclear funding, role definitions, and insufficient staff to deliver the model effectively. Professor Hawthorne urged the government to increase core GP funding through a Primary Care Investment Standard and to provide clear plans for recruiting and retaining more doctors.
Despite the challenges, the RCGP expressed cautious support for the 10-Year Health Plan’s vision to strengthen community-based care and focus on prevention, while stressing that these goals will only be achievable if the government delivers the necessary investment and practical support for general practice.
