New standard: Support needed after weight loss treatment

National Institute for Health & Care Excellence
NICE has updated its quality standard on obesity, stressing that support should not stop when medication or weight management programmes end.

Research shows many people regain weight without follow-up help, which can affect both physical and mental health.

The new standard sets out expectations for healthcare providers, including:

  • Ongoing check-ins for at least a year after treatment

  • Tailored action plans covering diet, activity, and daily routines

  • Access to resources such as NHS Better Health, dietitian support, and local peer groups

The update comes as new weight-loss drugs like semaglutide (Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) are being rolled out to those most in need. With obesity affecting almost two-thirds of adults in England, NICE highlights that long-term support is essential to prevent weight regain and reduce pressure on the NHS.

The new guidance replaces three older standards and is expected to be adopted immediately by services across England and Wales.
