New NHS mental health centres could reshape primary care support
Announced on 5 August, the programme will create 100 community mental health centres alongside 59 dedicated mental health emergency departments. The first sites are expected to open from autumn 2026, with further facilities following from March 2027.
For primary care, the development could represent an important shift in how patients with mental health needs access support. The new community centres are intended to provide walk-in support without a referral, with mental health and specialist teams working alongside GPs, local authorities, voluntary organisations and families.
One of the most significant potential benefits is the creation of additional routes into mental health support outside traditional primary and secondary care pathways. Patients experiencing emerging or moderate mental health difficulties may be able to access specialist help earlier, potentially reducing the number of people who rely on their practice as the first and sometimes only point of contact. For practice teams, this could help to ease some of the pressure associated with managing increasingly complex mental health presentations. It may also provide practices with somewhere to direct patients who need more support than primary care can provide, but who do not necessarily require a secondary mental health referral.
The Government says the centres are designed to intervene earlier, before problems escalate into crisis which is an important development in its broader ambition to move mental health care from crisis intervention towards earlier, community-based support. It also builds on the Government's wider investment in mental health, including the recruitment of 8,500 additional mental health workers and its commitment to expand community mental health provision through the 10 Year Health Plan.
Funding will be split between £187 million for the 100 community mental health centres and £156 million for the 59 emergency departments. Fifty-seven of the sites will be new builds and 102 will be conversions of existing buildings and will span across all regions of England.
