Managing Common Skin Infections and Infestations in Primary Care
Skin infections and infestations represent the most frequently encountered dermatological conditions in primary care. Skin infections may be bacterial, fungal, and or viral or skin infestations. Early recognition and accurate diagnosis are essential to ensure appropriate treatment, prevent complications, reduce transmission, and minimise unnecessary use of antimicrobial therapies. This session will help primary care healthcare professionals to improve diagnosis and management of these conditions including cellulitis, impetigo, dermatophyte infections, herpes simplex, warts, and scabies. In addition, discussion on prescribing, current guidance and treatment pathways will help delegates to understand correct topical or systemic agents, including supporting antimicrobial stewardship to reduce resistance. The session will include practical advice for patients and carers to support them in adherence to treatment, hygiene measures, and prevention of recurrence or spread.
By the end of this session, delegates should be able to:
- Identify and differentiate common bacterial, fungal, and viral skin infections and infestations based on clinical features and appropriate investigations
- Apply evidence-based prescribing principles to manage infections and infestations effectively.
- Enhance practical skills in patient education to support understanding, self-management, and prevention of transmission and recurrence.
