Lifestyle Medicine in Action: Case Studies from UK Primary Care

20 May 2026
GP Clinical Theatre

Lifestyle medicine is increasingly recognised as an evidence-based approach to preventing and managing chronic disease, but how can it be applied within the realities of everyday general practice? In this practical, case-led session, primary care clinicians will demonstrate how lifestyle medicine can be integrated into routine consultations using real-world examples from UK practice. Focusing on common scenarios such as cardio-metabolic risk and diabetes, the session will explore how to identify key opportunities within everyday consultations to introduce lifestyle interventions. Through case studies, the speakers will share how they support patients using evidence-based approaches that are realistic within a standard 10-minute appointment. The session will also address how to support behaviour change in time-pressured settings and how lifestyle medicine can complement conventional medical management. A brief overview of lifestyle medicine training and certification pathways will be included, with signposting to further resources for clinicians interested in developing their practice. This session is designed for GPs and primary care clinicians looking for practical, evidence-based ways to apply lifestyle medicine in real-world settings.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how lifestyle medicine can be applied in common primary care scenarios, including cardio-metabolic risk and diabetes.
  • Identify opportunities within routine consultations to introduce effective lifestyle interventions.
  • Apply simple, evidence-based strategies to support behaviour change within the constraints of a standard GP appointment.
